Lightning is an electrical discharge produced by cumulonimbus clouds or clouds closed to ground. The discharge will bring strong lightning and huge thunder and large energy transmission. With the understanding of lightning and in-depth study of thunder formation, the users have the better protective measures for disaster caused by lightning. But, the indirect thunder (such as clouds insides, the lightning between clouds, or the objects nearby lightning) can still sense the surge voltage and current. In addition, the large power switching operation will produce large surge voltage and current in power lines.
The lightning impact to electronic equipment will be two ways:
- High-energy lightning impulse strike to the equipment through the outdoor transmission cables, connections between the devices and power lines. It will make electronic equipment connected in the middle or end of the line damaged.
- Lightning strikes the earth or ground conductor, causing the partial instant potential rise, spread to nearby electronic equipment and damage its insulation.
